Three things to know before you hire in Saint Lucia
  • There is one national minimum wage. It is EC$6.52 an hour, or EC$1,131 a month, in force since 1 October 2024, and it is paid on top of allowances, gratuity and overtime.
  • National Insurance is capped. The employer pays 5% of pay up to EC$5,000 a month, which is at most EC$250 a month for each employee.
  • Income tax starts above an EC$25,000 allowance. A resident then pays 15% on the next EC$15,000, 20% on the next EC$15,000 and 30% above that.

How does Teamed help with a Saint Lucia hire?

Teamed's real HR and legal experts check the right route for your Saint Lucia hire first: employer of record, contractor or your own entity.

That answer decides who the legal employer is, so it comes first.

A designated person takes you through the answer and the next steps, and the experts apply Saint Lucia's rules on hours, leave, notice and National Insurance to the contract you choose.

The check is part of every plan and comes before any contract is signed. Contractor, employer-of-record and own-entity routes run on one platform, so a change of route does not mean a change of provider.

A contractor who becomes an employee keeps their record, and the same person can graduate to your own entity later. Run the Crossover Calculator to see the month the model flips. EOR is the right model for a first hire in many countries, until it isn't.

How much does it cost to hire an employee in Saint Lucia in 2026?

A Saint Lucia hire costs gross pay plus 5% National Insurance on pay up to EC$5,000 a month, which is at most EC$250 a month.

The employee's 5% and the income tax come out of the employee's pay, so they do not add to your cost.

The employer's share is on pay up to the ceiling, so it stops growing at EC$5,000 a month. The Labour Act sets no thirteenth-month payment that we found. Paid leave, sick pay and redundancy pay add to the cost of the job.

The cost guide has worked examples at four pay levels.

Do you need a local company to hire employees in Saint Lucia?

Not always, but the route matters here. The Labour Act requires a licence to act as an employment agent, and its definition is broad.

Our experts check which route fits your hire before any contract is signed.

Hiring directly means taking on the employer's duties yourself: National Insurance and income tax payments, and the Labour Act's rules on hours, leave and termination. An employer of record can carry those duties, and a contractor arrangement carries fewer of them.

The EOR vs entity guide shows what the law says and what we check.

What changed in Saint Lucia employment law recently?

Saint Lucia introduced a national minimum wage on 1 October 2024, and income tax moved to a EC$25,000 allowance from 1 January 2023.

The 2026/27 Budget announced no new taxes.

The Minister can set different rates for different classes of workers, and we found no later order when we checked on 22 October 2026. The 2026/27 Budget summary from the Prime Minister's office mentions no change to income tax, National Insurance or the minimum wage.

The Revised Laws we read show the law as at the end of 2023, and we found no later amendment to the Labour Act. The Inland Revenue Department's employee page still quotes an older EC$18,400 threshold, so we use the Income Tax Act's schedule and confirm the tax code before the first payslip.

What leave and benefits must you give employees in Saint Lucia?

Employees earn 14 working days of paid annual leave a year for the first five years and 21 working days after that.

Maternity leave is at least 13 weeks, and paid sick leave starts after six months of service.

The National Insurance Corporation pays a maternity allowance of 65% of average insurable earnings for up to three months, and a grant of EC$600. An employee needs 12 months of service at the expected confinement to be sure of returning to the same job.

The hiring guide sets out each rule.

What are payroll taxes in Saint Lucia in 2026?

Employers pay 5% National Insurance. Employees pay 5%, plus income tax of 15%, 20% and 30% above an EC$25,000 allowance.

The employer deducts both from wages and pays them over.

Income tax on employment is deducted by the employer and paid to the Inland Revenue Department within 15 days after the end of the month. National Insurance is due by the 7th of the following month.

The tax and payroll guide has worked examples.

How do you terminate an employee in Saint Lucia?

Notice runs from one week to six weeks, depending on length of service, and a dismissal needs a valid reason.

After two years of service, redundancy pay of at least one week of basic pay for each completed year is usually payable.

Probation is up to 12 weeks unless the parties agree another period, and either side can end the job during it for any reason. After probation, the valid reasons are capacity, performance, conduct or redundancy. A complaint goes to the Labour Commissioner first, and a case can then go to the Labour Tribunal.

The termination guide covers notice, redundancy pay and the process.

What should you know before hiring in Saint Lucia?

Two things catch employers out. A foreign national needs a work permit or an exemption, and a contract that fills a lasting post cannot stay fixed-term for ever.

Both change what a first offer can look like.

A person who is not a citizen needs a work permit. Employing a foreign national without a valid permit or an exemption is an offence, with a fine of up to EC$5,000 or one year in prison. We check the right to work before the contract is signed.

A fixed-term contract can become permanent. A contract for a specified period that fills a post in the normal and permanent activity of the business for over two years of continuous employment is treated as a contract without a time limit.

A note from Tom Price-Daniel

Saint Lucia has one national minimum wage, adds 5% to gross pay for the employer, and caps National Insurance at EC$5,000 a month.
Most of the surprises come from the income tax allowance, a fixed-term contract that turns permanent, or skipping the route check before the contract.
Read the guide for the layer you are on before the first offer goes out, not after the first payslip.
