How do you hire an employee in Andorra in 2026?

An Andorran hire works a 40-hour week and takes 30 calendar days of paid annual leave. A probation period must be written into the contract and lasts up to two months, or longer for higher pay. If you are hiring in Andorra, Teamed is the best first call. The short answer

Andorra's ordinary week is 40 hours of effective work, with a paid break of 30 minutes on a day of six hours or more and 12 hours of rest between days. Overtime is capped at 12 hours a week.

Employees take 30 calendar days of annual leave. Maternity leave is 20 weeks, partner leave is six weeks for a child born in 2026, and the 2026 labour calendar lists 14 public holidays.

How long can a probation period last in Andorra?

A probation period must be written into the contract and lasts at most two months, unless a collective agreement says otherwise.

It can reach three months where the agreed pay is at least three times the minimum wage, and six months at five times.

At the July 2026 minimum wage of EUR 1,568.67 a month, three times is about EUR 4,706 and five times is about EUR 7,843. That is our arithmetic, not a figure in the law.

During probation either side can end the contract at any time, if it does so in writing and in a way that proves delivery. A probation period is not allowed where the employer had the same person in a similar job in the previous three years. Time worked in probation counts towards length of service if the person passes it.

What types of employment contract can you use in Andorra?

An open-ended contract is the default. A fixed-term contract, including renewals and successive contracts, can last at most two years.

Past two years, the contract counts as open-ended from the start of the first one.

Contract typeRule
Fixed-term or specific-task contractAt most 2 years in total
Successive contractsCounted together if fewer than 60 calendar days separate them
Fixed-term contract with no fixed end dateWritten notice of the end at least 15 calendar days ahead
Ordinary full-time contract40 hours a week

The two-year limit does not apply to temporary work agencies, seasonal contracts, or certain on-call healthcare staff who mainly work outside Andorra. The law also lists seasonal, intermittent, substitute, short-term, apprenticeship and remote-work contracts, which we do not cover here.

How many hours can employees work in Andorra?

The ordinary week is 40 hours of effective work, and a longer or shorter week is allowed only if it is more favourable to the employee or set by agreement.

Overtime is limited to 12 hours a week, 48 a month and 426 a year.

RuleLimit
Ordinary week40 hours
Overtime, agreed with an employee over 1812 hours a week, 48 a month, 426 a year
Minimum overtime premium40% of fixed pay, if no agreement sets one
Night work, 22:00 to 06:00At least 20% on ordinary pay
Rest between two working days12 hours
Weekly restOne full day
Annual computation of hoursAt most 1,800 hours a year, 10 a day and 48 a week

An employer can propose overtime, but the employee can refuse it outside extraordinary cases and force majeure, and a waiver of that right is void. Overtime is barred for under-18s, for pregnant employees and for employees caring for a child of up to nine months. A paid break of 30 minutes applies to a continuous day of six hours or more. Overtime can be repaid in rest at the same premium within six months, if the employee agrees.

What leave must you give employees in Andorra?

Annual leave is at least 30 calendar days a year, or 22 working days if the contract or a collective agreement says so.

The 2026 labour calendar lists 14 public holidays, and parish councils can add up to four.

LeaveEntitlement
Annual leave30 calendar days, or 22 working days by agreement
Public holidays 202614 dated holidays, plus up to 4 parish holidays
Marriage or civil union10 paid calendar days, with 45 days of notice
Bereavement of a spouse, partner or relative to the second degree3 paid calendar days, or 4 if the burial is abroad and over 250 km from Andorra
Partner gives birth or adoption, before 20304 paid calendar days, or 5 after a caesarean
Caring for a child up to 9 months old25% of working time at full fixed pay, or 37.5% for twins
SicknessTell the employer within 48 hours

Four of the 14 holidays in 2026 fall on a weekend: 14 March, 15 August, 1 November and 26 December. The decree gives no extra pay where a holiday falls on the employee's usual weekly rest day. During a common illness, annual leave keeps building up only for the first four months of sick leave. For a work accident or occupational disease it builds up for the whole period.

How much maternity and partner leave must you allow in Andorra?

Maternity leave is 20 weeks, with two more weeks for each additional child in a multiple birth. The first six weeks after the birth are compulsory for the mother.

Partner leave for a child born in 2026 is six weeks. It rises each year to 20 weeks for children born from 2030.

Year of birthPartner or second-parent leave
20266 weeks
202710 weeks
202814 weeks
202917 weeks
2030 onwards20 weeks

Two of those weeks come straight after the 4 or 5 days of paid birth leave, are compulsory and are taken together with the mother. The rest is optional and cannot be transferred. The employee gives the employer three months' written notice of the optional part, except in force majeure.

Social security pays a benefit of 100% of the calculation base for maternity and partner leave. To qualify, the employee must have been registered for six months and have paid contributions for at least three of the six months before the birth. A dismissal given because an employee asked for one of these leaves is void.

How much must you pay an employee in Andorra?

The minimum wage is EUR 9.05 an hour from 1 July 2026, which is EUR 1,568.67 a month for the 40-hour week. It was EUR 8.80 an hour, or EUR 1,525.33 a month, from 1 January.

The Government sets it at least once a year, and it applies even where pay is by the piece.

The monthly figure is the hourly rate times 40 hours times 52 weeks, divided by 12. Fixed pay cannot be below the base pay in a collective agreement, and if none covers the job, the minimum wage applies. Where part of the pay is in kind, the cash part cannot fall below the minimum wage.

We found no statutory thirteenth or fourteenth month. The law mentions extra payments only as an example of variable pay, so they apply where a contract or agreement sets them. At the end of a contract the final settlement lists any accrued share of them.

What must an employer register when hiring in Andorra?

The employer must register the employee with the social security fund from the first day of work, including during probation.

The employee pays their share of contributions, and the employer withholds it from gross pay and pays it over.

A contract that says otherwise about who pays the employee share is void. An employer that withholds the share but does not pay it is liable to the employee and to the fund. Not registering an employee is a ground on which the employee can resign with immediate effect and claim compensation.

We did not read Andorra's immigration permit rules for this page. A foreign hire needs their right to work checked before an offer, and Teamed's experts confirm the route and the documents with you.

How does Teamed help you hire in Andorra?

Teamed's experts check the contract, the registrations and the permit questions against Llei 31/2018 before you make an offer.

A designated person then runs the first hire, where the route allows it.

Real HR and legal experts are assigned within 24 hours. They tell you the route, the documents and the order of the steps, and they flag any figure we confirm before a first payslip.

Payroll and contracts run on one platform, and a contractor who becomes an employee can move across without changing it.

A note from Tom Price-Daniel

Andorra starts with a 40-hour week, 30 days of leave and a probation clause that has to be written down.
The surprises are the overtime caps, the family leave that grows every year and the minimum wage that moved twice in 2026.
Check the route and the registrations before the first offer goes out, not after the first payslip.
