The Arbeitsgesetz caps the working week at 45 hours for industrial staff and for office, technical and other salaried staff, and at 48 hours for other employees. Overtime beyond the ordinary hours carries a supplement of at least 25% in listed cases.
Employees earn four weeks of paid leave each year of service. Sick pay starts after three months of service, and maternity leave is 20 weeks at 80% of the last wage.
What are the working-hours rules in Liechtenstein?
The maximum working week is 45 hours for industrial staff and for office, technical and other salaried staff, and 48 hours for all other employees.
Young employees aged 15 to 17 are capped at 40 hours.
| Rule | Limit |
|---|---|
| Weekly maximum, industrial staff and office, technical and other salaried staff | 45 hours |
| Weekly maximum, all other employees | 48 hours |
| Weekly maximum, employees aged 15 to under 18 | 40 hours |
| Span of one employee's working day, including breaks and overtime | 13 hours |
| Daily rest | 11 consecutive hours |
| Weekly free time | 1.5 days |
| Overtime (Ueberzeit) per day, outside exceptions | 2 hours |
| Average week including overtime, over four months | 48 hours |
Overtime beyond the weekly maximum carries a supplement of at least 25%. For office, technical and other salaried staff it applies only to overtime above 60 hours in a calendar year. No supplement is due where the employee agrees to take equal time off instead.
The Civil Code adds that contractual overtime not taken as time off is paid at the normal wage plus at least a quarter, unless the contract or a collective agreement says otherwise in writing. Sunday work needs a permit from the Office of Economic Affairs, and temporary Sunday work carries a 100% supplement. Check which rule covers each role before you write the contract.
How does probation work in Liechtenstein?
The first month of a job is probation by default, and either side can end it with seven days' notice, to the end of a working week.
Probation can run to three months by written agreement.
After probation the notice scale applies, starting at one month in the first year of service. Put any longer probation in writing.
The termination guide has the full notice table.
How much leave do Liechtenstein employees get?
Annual leave is at least four weeks each year of service, and five weeks for employees up to the completed age of 20.
The Arbeitsgesetz also lists 13 statutory holidays, which are treated like Sundays.
| Leave | Entitlement |
|---|---|
| Annual leave | At least 4 weeks per year of service; 5 weeks up to the completed age of 20 |
| Statutory holidays | 13 listed in the Arbeitsgesetz |
| Sick pay | 3 weeks in the first year of service, then an appropriately longer period |
| Maternity leave | 20 weeks, at 80% of the last wage |
| Paternity leave | 2 weeks, at 80% of the last wage |
| Parental leave | 4 months after more than 6 months of service; up to 2 months paid |
| Care leave | Up to 5 working days per year of service |
| Family emergency | Up to 3 working days per event, on a medical certificate |
The 13 holidays are New Year, Epiphany, Easter Monday, 1 May, Ascension, Whit Monday, Corpus Christi, Assumption, Birth of Mary, All Saints, Immaculate Conception, Christmas Day and St Stephen's Day.
Sick pay applies where the job has lasted, or was agreed for, more than three months. Where a compulsory insurance pays at least four fifths of the wage, the employer does not have to pay it. Where the insurance pays less, the employer pays the difference up to four fifths.
What family leave must you give in Liechtenstein?
Maternity leave is 20 consecutive weeks, starting up to four weeks before the birth, with a maternity allowance of 80% of the last wage before the birth.
Paternity leave is two consecutive weeks.
The maternity allowance under the Family Allowance Act needs at least 270 days of old-age insurance before the birth. A hospital stay of the newborn of at least two weeks extends the leave by the length of the stay, up to eight weeks. A dismissal during pregnancy and during maternity leave is barred after probation.
Paternity leave needs at least 180 days of old-age insurance before paternity is established, and it is paid at 80%. Parental leave is four months after more than six months of service, and the parental allowance is up to two months at 100% of the average monthly wage, capped by the Act. If the employee already took comparable parental leave in another EEA state, the four months shorten accordingly.
The government sets the maximum wage used for the maternity and paternity allowance by ordinance, and we do not print it here.
Can you use fixed-term contracts in Liechtenstein?
Yes, but a fixed-term contract can be extended at most three times, to a total of five years.
Beyond that it counts as open-ended.
A fixed-term contract ends without notice when the term ends. If it simply continues after the end date, it counts as open-ended.

Frequently asked questions
What is the monthly minimum wage in Liechtenstein?
We found no statutory national minimum wage, hourly or monthly. A sector floor can still bind an employer where the government has declared a collective agreement generally binding, so check the sector before you fix an offer.
How long can a probationary period last in Liechtenstein?
The first month of a job is probation by default, with seven days' notice. A longer probation can be agreed in writing, up to three months.
Is there a thirteenth-month payment in Liechtenstein?
We found none in the Civil Code's employment law or the Arbeitsgesetz. A bonus is a matter of contract, and a collective agreement can provide one, so check the sector before you fix the contract.
How much sick pay must an employer give in Liechtenstein?
Three weeks of wages in the first year of service, and an appropriately longer period after that, because the law sets no scale. It applies once the job has lasted more than three months, and compulsory insurance can take over where it pays at least four fifths of the wage.
How long is maternity leave in Liechtenstein?
Twenty consecutive weeks, starting no earlier than four weeks before the birth, with a maternity allowance of 80% of the last wage. A hospital stay of the newborn can extend it by up to eight weeks.
Liechtenstein gives you a 45 or 48-hour week, four weeks of annual leave and 20 weeks of maternity leave at 80% pay, but no statutory minimum wage that we found.
The traps sit in the details: a probation that is one month unless you agree otherwise in writing, and a sick-pay rule with no scale after the first year.
Your designated person runs the first hire from signed terms to first payslip.
