An employer gives written notice of one working day, one week, two weeks, one month or two months, depending on service. Up to the end of probation no notice is needed.
A dismissal needs a valid reason connected with capacity, conduct or the operational needs of the business. A termination allowance is payable after a year of service.
How much notice must you give in Grenada?
Written notice runs from one working day to two months, depending on how long the employee has worked for you.
Up to the end of probation, either side can end the job without notice.
| Length of service | Employer's minimum notice |
|---|---|
| Under 1 month | 1 working day |
| 1 month to under 3 months | 1 week |
| 3 months to under 1 year | 2 weeks |
| 1 year to under 5 years | 1 month |
| 5 years or more | 2 months |
| Serious misconduct | None required |
An employer can pay the wages and benefits for the notice period instead of having it worked. The parties can agree a longer period, and an employer can waive the notice it is owed. An employee gives two weeks after three months of service and one month after a year. Notice cannot take effect while the employee is on leave under the Act.
All wages and other pay due must be paid within seven days after the job ends, including leave that was accrued and not taken.
When can you dismiss in Grenada?
Only for a valid reason connected with the employee's capacity or conduct, the operational needs of the business, or a breach of contract or disciplinary rules.
Some reasons never count, including pregnancy, sickness absence, and making a complaint against the employer.
The reasons that do not count also include race, sex, religion, political opinion, disability, family responsibilities, joining a union and refusing dangerous work. An employer who dismisses must prove the reason, and if it cannot, the dismissal is conclusively presumed unfair. It must also show it acted with justice and equity.
An employer can dismiss summarily for serious misconduct that makes it unreasonable to continue the relationship. An employer cannot fine an employee. A dismissal for pregnancy is an offence, with the burden of proof on the employer.
When is a termination allowance payable in Grenada?
When the employer ends the job, an employee with a year or more of continuous service is owed at least one week's wages for each completed year.
It is not owed to someone who is entitled to a gratuity.
| Item | What the Employment Act sets |
|---|---|
| Who qualifies | Employees with 1 year or more of continuous employment who are not entitled to gratuity |
| Trigger | Termination at the initiative of the employer, including the insolvency of the employer |
| Amount | At least 1 week's wages for each completed year of service |
| Not owed | Fair dismissal for conduct, an unreasonable refusal of re-employment, or a person over the pensionable age (63 in 2026) |
Continuous service counts across a sale of the business, so a successor employer takes on the history. The employees of the old employer can choose to be terminated and take the allowance, or move across.
What happens if a Grenada dismissal is challenged?
The employee complains to the Labour Commissioner within three months of the dismissal.
If the Commissioner and then the Minister cannot settle it, it can go to the Arbitration Tribunal.
The Tribunal first considers reinstatement or re-engagement, and can award compensation instead. The award is not less than two weeks' pay for each year of service for workers with under two years, and one month's pay for each year of service for workers with more. A further amount can be added where the reason breaches the Act's protections.
If a reinstatement order is not obeyed, the employee gets a special award of 26 weeks' wages as well. An employee dismissed during probation cannot bring this complaint. Plan the process, the reasons and the record before you end a contract.
How does Teamed support a termination in Grenada?
Teamed's real HR and legal experts check the right route for your Grenada hire first: employer of record, contractor or your own entity, and a designated person guides the notice, the reasons and the record.

The check is part of every plan and comes before any contract is signed. Contractor, employer-of-record and own-entity routes run on one platform, so a change of route does not mean a change of provider.

Frequently asked questions
How much notice does an employer give in Grenada?
From one working day for service under a month, up to two months for five years or more. In between it is one week, two weeks and one month. An employer can pay the wages instead of having the notice worked.
Is a termination allowance payable on every termination in Grenada?
No. It is for termination at the employer's initiative after a year or more of service, at least one week's wages for each completed year. It is not owed after a fair dismissal for conduct.
Can you dismiss without a reason in Grenada?
Only up to the end of probation, which is up to one month or three months by default. After probation, a dismissal needs a valid reason, and the employer must prove it.
How long does an employee have to complain of unfair dismissal?
Three months from the date of dismissal, to the Labour Commissioner. A person dismissed during probation cannot bring the complaint.
Grenada ties notice to length of service, asks for a valid reason after probation and pays a termination allowance after a year.
The reason and the record are what decide most challenges, because the employer carries the burden of proof.
