What goes in an international hiring plan?

One row for each planned hire, even if the role is only an idea. The Plan tab holds the hire; the Country checks tab holds what you learned about each country from the country guide.

What does each column hold?

The yellow columns are for you to fill in. The grey columns are formulas: the latest date to sign the offer, and the monthly cost in your own currency.

How do you choose a route for each hire?

Choose a route country by country, then write down why. A contractor works under a services agreement. An employer of record is the legal employer for you in a country where you have no entity. Your own entity employs people directly.

If you plan several hires in one country, the Crossover Calculator shows when your own entity could become the cheaper route there. The classification tool helps with the contractor question.

How do you cost each hire?

Use the employer cost calculator or a written quote, not gross pay alone, and record where the figure came from and the date. Employer contributions and benefits raise the monthly cost above the pay the person sees.

How do you plan lead times?

Ask your provider for the weeks from signed offer to start in each country, and include any visa, permit or registration step. The first international hire timeline shows the order of the steps. Enter the lead time in weeks and the sheet gives you the latest date to sign the offer.

Can you copy the table instead?

Yes. This is the first tab of the file, in the same column order. Select it and paste it into a sheet, or download the Excel file for the formulas.

Why plan hiring across countries in one place?

Each hire in a new country has its own lead time, its own cost and its own route. A plan on one sheet shows which starts depend on which steps, and which dates are already tight.

It also lets finance see the monthly cost of the whole plan in one currency, and lets you spot the country where several hires make the route worth reviewing.

How does Teamed help you cost a hire?

Teamed's employer cost calculator covers 94 countries and all 50 US states.

Questions people ask

  • Is the template free?

Yes. It is free, there is no form, and you can copy it, change it and share it. The download link gives you the Excel file.

  • Does the template tell me which route to choose?

No. It gives you a place to record the choice and the reason. The country guides, the classification tool and the Crossover Calculator help you decide.

  • How far ahead should I plan?

Twelve months is a good start, because lead times in a new country can take weeks. Review the plan each month and move dates as they change.
