Hiring Web3 and Blockchain Talent: A Complete Guide

A distributed team collaborating across locations, representing international web3 and blockchain hiring.

Hiring for a web3 or blockchain company internationally usually raises two separate questions that get conflated into one: how do we hire and employ blockchain talent compliantly, and can we pay people in crypto? They have different answers. This guide covers both honestly, including a direct benchmark of how the major employer-of-record and payroll platforms actually handle crypto today, not what their marketing pages imply.

Hiring blockchain and web3 developers

Blockchain engineering talent is genuinely scarce and thinly spread across a small number of hubs rather than concentrated in one or two countries, so hiring internationally is usually the default, not an exception. The practical considerations are mostly the same ones that apply to any distributed technical hire, with a couple of sharper edges specific to this space:

Compliant contracts and IP assignment

Protocol and codebase IP needs to sit clearly with the employer, not the individual contributor. This matters more in web3 than most fields, given how many teams start as informal, pseudonymous contributor relationships before anyone gets around to paperwork. A compliant contractor agreement or employment contract with proper IP-assignment clauses closes that gap early, rather than after a dispute.

Misclassification risk

Web3 teams often scale from a handful of contributors paid informally into a real headcount without ever revisiting how those people are actually engaged. That's exactly the pattern that creates misclassification exposure, worth reviewing before it becomes a bigger problem than the hire itself.

Structuring a distributed team as you scale

Most web3 companies start with contractors in whichever countries their contributors already live, then formalise into direct employment (via an employer of record) once a role becomes core and full-time, and eventually stand up their own entity in a country once headcount there justifies it. That progression (contractor, then EOR, then owned entity) is the same one Teamed advises for any international team; nothing about being a web3 company changes the underlying logic, though token-based compensation and equity structures are a specialist legal and tax question that sits outside what any EOR handles directly and is worth a dedicated adviser.

Can you pay people in crypto?

Short answer: not as full statutory payroll, from any compliant employer of record, including Teamed. Tax withholding requires a currency whose value is knowable on payday, which volatile cryptocurrencies aren't. What Teamed can do is facilitate paying a specific contractor or EOR invoice in USDC, a dollar-pegged stablecoin, on request. The full detail is here.

How the major EOR and payroll platforms handle crypto and web3 clients

We checked this directly against each platform's own current pages in July 2026, rather than relying on older marketing claims. Details change, so confirm anything current before relying on it for a live decision.

PlatformContractor crypto/stablecoin paymentsFull salary paid in crypto (EOR)Positions itself as a web3 specialist
DeelYes, contractors can withdraw pay as USDC or USDTPartial: eligible EOR employees can redirect 10–25% of net (post-tax) pay to a stablecoin wallet; gross payroll stays fiatYes, dedicated crypto/blockchain industry page
RemoteYes, but narrow: USDC only, on one network, for contractors of US-based paying companiesNoNo
MultiplierYes, Bitcoin and USDT via a payment partnerNot confirmed on their EOR pagesNo
Papaya GlobalNo, fiat and local rails onlyNoNo
Pebl (formerly Velocity Global)No: 'crypto-ready payroll' pays fiat wages that employees can separately convert afterward, not wages denominated in cryptoNoNo
OysterNo, fiat currencies only, stated as a legal and tax requirementNoNo
TeamedYes, contractor and EOR invoices can both be settled in USDCYes, full EOR salary can be paid in USDC on requestYes, web3/crypto is one of Teamed's seven named target industries

Two things stand out. First, among the general EOR platforms compared here, Teamed is the only one that pays a full EOR salary in crypto, and specifically because it's USDC: a dollar-pegged stablecoin doesn't carry the volatility risk that rules out paying a full salary in Bitcoin or Ethereum. Even Deel, otherwise the most crypto-forward of the group, caps its stablecoin option at a minority of net pay after tax. Second, the contractor-side options that do exist elsewhere are narrower than they're often marketed: Remote's is USDC-only and geographically restricted; Multiplier's own site is inconsistent about whether its crypto option extends past contractors.

For crypto-native payment infrastructure specifically

If what you actually need is broader than USDC settlement on individual invoices: a fully distributed contractor workforce paid natively across a range of cryptocurrencies, on-chain invoicing, DAO-style payment flows. That's a genuinely different job, and there are companies that do it well. Bitwage and Request Finance are two of the more established options, and if that's the entire problem you're solving for, they're a better fit than any EOR, Teamed included. Neither is a legal employer, though: they handle the payment, not the contract, the compliance, or the statutory side of employing someone. Needing both compliant employment and native crypto payment tooling usually means pairing one of them with an EOR, not choosing between them.

Where Teamed fits

Web3 and blockchain is one of the industries Teamed builds for, not an afterthought: contractor, EOR, or your own entity as the team grows in a given country, with USDC settlement available on specific invoices where it matters. What that specialism doesn't mean is being a crypto-payroll platform. It isn't the right choice if crypto-native contractor payment tooling is the only thing you're solving for. If your need is broader than payments (the actual employment, compliance and entity questions that come with hiring web3 talent globally), talk to a specialist about your specific situation.
