Hiring Insights for the United States

Please read through our frequently asked questions regarding hiring in the USA. We've listed the most common questions and answers below.

Sickness Cover

In the US, sick leave falls under the coverage of the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and is typically reserved for serious illnesses.

The FMLA grants up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave for eligible employees who have worked for the employer for at least 12 months.

Additionally, various states have their own regulations regarding sickness coverage that employers must provide. For comprehensive details, please consult with our country experts.

Parental Leave

In the US maternity leave is covered under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) The FMLA provides up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave for an employee.Employees are eligible for FMLA leave if they have worked for the employer for at least 12 months.

There is no cover for paternity  leave

Annual Leave

There is no federal requirement to pay employees for time off such as vacations and holidays, It is up to the employer to decide how much holiday to offer. Annual leave, called paid time off (PTO) is counted in hours rather then days.

Health Insurance

It is mandatory for all full time employees to receive health insurance. The minimum that an employer can cover is 50%. Pricing adapts to each employee's unique circumstances.

Custom Benefits

Our team can build custom benefits packages based on the specific needs of our customers whilst ensuring that the benefits will stay 100% compliant.

Exempt and Non-exempt workers

In the US, employees are classified as Exempt or Non-Exempt, primarily based on their job description and salary. Some states have strict criteria for exemption. Exempt employees, often found in executive or professional roles, are not entitled to minimum wage or overtime pay. Conversely, non-exempt employees, covered by the Fair Labor Standards Act, are typically expected to adhere to instructions without making independent management decisions. They are eligible for overtime pay for hours worked beyond 40 per week.

Employment Contracts

In the USA, the approach to employment contracts differs from the model commonly seen in Europe. In the USA a job can start with a verbal offer. However, at Teamed, we initiate the process with an official offer letter, along with comprehensive documents detailing the paid time off policy and sick leave policy provided.

At Will Employment in the USA

In the US, "at-will employment" signifies that either the employer or employee can end the employment at any time and for any reason that isn't illegal, without facing legal repercussions.

This policy eliminates the concept of a probationary period in US employment law, granting employers the freedom to terminate employees without cause or notice, thereby offering flexibility in staffing decisions.

Additionally, this at-will clause extends to employees, allowing them to resign at their discretion without a mandated notice period.

At Teamed, transparency is paramount. We pride ourselves on never imposing additional fees. That means no extra FX fees, no additional onboarding fees—just clear, upfront pricing. What we agree upon is precisely what you'll pay.

When will I be invoiced the first time?

For employees commencing between the 30th of the prior month and the 13th of the current month, payments are processed on the 15th of the month.

Employees starting between the 15th and 28th of the month receive payment on the final day of the month.

Are there deposits for employees?

Our standard procedure involves requesting a deposit from our customers, typically equivalent to the employee's first month's salary, as a precautionary measure. This practice ensures our ability to consistently fulfil our legal obligation to pay employees promptly.

How does invoicing work?

With Teamed, you'll get one invoice in one currency with itemised list by employees. Your employees and contractors get paid in their local currencies.

"No hitches, all straight forward and without a hefty price tag! Thank you!”
