# When is a final paycheck due in *Washington*?

Washington is the plain one, and it is worth knowing precisely because Oregon across the river is not: one business day there, one ordinary payday here.

In Washington, the Department of Labor & Industries states it directly: **if an employee quits or is fired, their final paycheck must be paid on or before the next regularly scheduled payday**, under [Wash. Rev. Code 49.48.010](https://www.lni.wa.gov/workers-rights/wages/getting-paid).

One deadline, both routes, no counting of days or hours. Washington imposes no acceleration on a discharge, which puts it at the relaxed end of the national range.

The contrast with Oregon matters for anyone hiring across the Columbia. A discharge in Portland is due by the end of the next business day; the same discharge in Vancouver waits for payday.

## When must a final paycheck be paid after firing someone in Washington?

On or before the next regularly scheduled payday, the same as a resignation.

Because the deadline is your own payday, an employer running a normal cycle will meet it without doing anything special. Washington is not a state where final pay needs an off-cycle payment capability.

That makes the amount the live question rather than the date, and Washington is an active enforcement state on wage deductions and on what counts as wages owed.

The duty to pay is separate from whether the termination itself was lawful. That is covered on the [Washington termination and at-will page](/country-hiring-guides/united-states/washington/termination-law-and-at-will-exceptions).

## Is it different if the employee resigns?

No. L&I states the same rule for an employee who quits and one who is fired.

The symmetry is useful if you operate across several states: Washington will accept the slowest compliant timetable you run, because it sets no tighter one of its own.

The corollary is that Washington gives you no statutory shelter if the final figure is wrong, and its deduction rules are stricter than most.

## How does Washington compare with the states around it?

Washington's plain payday rule sits beside two of the tightest deadlines in the country, which is the thing to watch if you hire across the north-west.

| State | If fired | If employee quits | Statute |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Washington | Next regular payday | Next regular payday | Wash. Rev. Code 49.48.010 |
| Oregon | End of the next business day | Immediately if 48 hours notice given, otherwise within 5 business days or next payday, whichever comes first | Or. Rev. Stat. 652.140 |
| California | Immediately | Within 72 hours, or immediately if 72 hours notice given | Cal. Labor Code 201, 202 |
| Idaho | Next payday or within 10 days (excluding weekends and holidays), whichever is sooner; within 48 hours of a written request | Next payday or within 10 days (excluding weekends and holidays), whichever is sooner | Idaho Code 45-606 |
| Montana | Immediately upon separation, unless a written policy extends to the next payday or within 15 days, whichever is earlier | Next regular payday or within 15 days, whichever comes first | Mont. Code 39-3-205 |

## How much of this do you still handle if you hire in Washington through an EOR?

None of it. The payroll run, the calculation of what is owed and the deduction rules behind it sit with the employer of record.

What costs more than the payday is everything around it:

- onboarding and offboarding fees
- termination charges
- contracts that lock you in
- FX markups on every pay run
- a platform built for a company ten times your size
- a ticket queue where you never learn who to contact

The industry profits from keeping that hidden. Teamed calls it the Hidden Global Employment Tax, and Teamed's whole model exists to remove it.

Teamed is the legal employer for your Washington hire. From $599 per employee per month, with zero FX markup. $0 setup, $0 exit, and you can [cancel any month](/pricing). You get a designated person and real HR and legal experts assigned within 24 hours, not a ticket.

Teamed's employer cost calculator covers 94 countries and all 50 US states.

A note from Tom Price-Daniel

Washington is the easy one on timing.
Next scheduled payday, whoever ended the employment, with nothing to count.
Spend the attention on the amount and on what you are allowed to deduct.
