# When is a final paycheck due in *Arizona*?

Arizona is another earlier-of-two state, and the pairing is unusual: seven working days against the end of the next pay period, with the sooner date governing.

In Arizona final wages after a discharge are due **within seven working days or by the end of the next pay period, whichever is sooner**, under [Ariz. Rev. Stat. 23-353](https://www.azleg.gov/ars/23/00353.htm). A resignation is paid on the next regular payday.

Working days rather than calendar days is the distinguishing detail. Weekends and public holidays extend the seven-day count rather than consuming it, which makes Arizona meaningfully more generous than a state like Texas counting calendar days.

But the second limb can still cut it short: if the next pay period ends before those seven working days are up, that earlier date is the deadline.

## When must a final paycheck be paid after firing someone in Arizona?

Within seven working days or by the end of the next pay period, whichever is sooner, under Ariz. Rev. Stat. 23-353.

Both limbs have to be checked for every discharge, because which one governs depends on where in your pay cycle the termination falls. A discharge early in a pay period will usually be governed by the seven working days; one late in a period may be governed by the period's end.

Counting in working days is the detail employers get wrong in the opposite direction from Texas: here a weekend does extend the window.

The duty to pay is separate from whether the termination itself was lawful. That is covered on the [Arizona termination and at-will page](/country-hiring-guides/united-states/arizona/termination-law-and-at-will-exceptions).

## What if the employee resigns instead?

The next regular payday for the pay period in which they quit.

Arizona ties the resignation deadline to the pay period the departure fell in rather than simply to the next payday, which is a slightly tighter formulation than it first appears.

As elsewhere, the discharge route is the one that will force an off-cycle payment.

## How does Arizona compare with the states around it?

Arizona is more generous than California next door and tighter than several of its other neighbours.

| Nevada | Immediately | Next payday or within 7 days, whichever is earlier | Nev. Rev. Stat. 608.020, 608.030 |
| Utah | Within 24 hours of termination | Next regular payday | Utah Code 34-28-5 |
| New Mexico | Within 5 days (task, piece and commission wages within 10 days) | Next regular payday | N.M. Stat. 50-4-4 |

## How much of this do you still handle if you hire in Arizona through an EOR?

None of it. The earlier-of-two arithmetic, the payment and the wage records sit with the employer of record.

What costs more than the deadline is everything around it:

- onboarding and offboarding fees
- termination charges
- contracts that lock you in
- FX markups on every pay run
- a platform built for a company ten times your size
- a ticket queue where you never learn who to contact

The industry profits from keeping that hidden. Teamed calls it the Hidden Global Employment Tax, and Teamed's whole model exists to remove it.

Teamed is the legal employer for your Arizona hire. From $599 per employee per month, with zero FX markup. $0 setup, $0 exit, and you can [cancel any month](/pricing). You get a designated person and real HR and legal experts assigned within 24 hours, not a ticket.

Teamed's employer cost calculator covers 94 countries and all 50 US states.

The next regular payday for the pay period in which they quit.

Are Arizona's seven days working days or calendar days?

A note from Tom Price-Daniel

Arizona counts in working days, which is kinder than it sounds.
Then it adds a second deadline that can cut the first one short.
Check both limbs on every discharge, because which governs depends on your pay cycle.
