The short answer

National Insurance is 10% of earnings in 2026, up to EC$5,000 a month: the employer pays 5% and the employee 5%.

Income tax is withheld by the employer. A resident has an EC$25,000 allowance, then pays 15% on the next EC$15,000, 20% on the next EC$15,000 and 30% above that.

The employer pays the income tax withheld within 15 days after the month ends, and National Insurance by the 7th of the following month.

## What does Saint Lucia National Insurance cost the employer and the employee?

National Insurance is 5% for the employer and 5% for the employee, a combined 10%.

It applies to earnings up to EC$5,000 a month.

The Act sets each share at 5% of wages or another rate the Minister fixes, and its schedule exempts earnings above EC$60,000 a year, which is the same limit as EC$5,000 a month. The employer deducts the employee's share from wages and pays both shares to the Corporation.

| Item | What applies |
| --- | --- |
| Employer share | 5%, at most EC$250 a month |
| Employee share | 5%, at most EC$250 a month |
| Registration | Within 7 days of hiring the first employee |
| Payment | On or before the 7th of the following month, with the monthly return |
| Late payment | Surcharge of 1.25% for each month or part of a month |

The Corporation's retirement pension starts at age 65, which is also the Labour Act's retirement age. We confirm which payments count as insurable earnings before the first payslip.

## How does income tax on wages work in Saint Lucia?

A resident individual has an allowance of EC$25,000 a year. The next EC$15,000 of chargeable income is taxed at 15%, the next EC$15,000 at 20% and the rest at 30%.

The employer deducts it from each payment.

The Income Tax Act sets a personal allowance of EC$25,000 from 1 January 2023, raised from EC$18,000, and the rates in its Fifth Schedule apply to chargeable income after allowances. Other allowances and deductions can lower the tax further, and National Insurance contributions are allowable deductions.

| Annual pay (EC$) | Tax on it |
| --- | --- |
| Up to 25,000 (the allowance) | None |
| 25,001 to 40,000 (the first 15,000 of chargeable income) | 15% |
| 40,001 to 55,000 (the next 15,000) | 20% |
| Above 55,000 | 30% |

The Inland Revenue Department's employee page still says tax applies only to income over EC$18,400 a year. That is an older figure, and the same site has a PAYE calculator for the changed regime from 2023, so we use the Act's schedules. The tax code the employer uses comes from the Department's deduction tables, and we confirm it before the first payslip. We found no change to these rates in the 2026/27 Budget summary.

## What does payroll look like at four pay levels?

At EC$5,000 a month the employee's National Insurance is EC$250 and the income tax on our arithmetic is EC$562.50.

The employer's cost on top is EC$250.

| Monthly gross pay (EC$) | Employee NI 5% (EC$) | Income tax (EC$) | Total deductions (EC$) | Take-home (EC$) |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 1,131 | 56.55 | 0.00 | 56.55 | 1,074.45 |
| 3,000 | 150.00 | 137.50 | 287.50 | 2,712.50 |
| 5,000 | 250.00 | 562.50 | 812.50 | 4,187.50 |
| 8,000 | 250.00 | 1,462.50 | 1,712.50 | 6,287.50 |

The figures are our arithmetic from the rates above for a resident with the EC$25,000 allowance only, before any other allowance, any relief for National Insurance and any bonus. Income tax is the annual tax divided by twelve. A real payslip can differ.

## What does a Saint Lucia employer file and pay each month?

Register as an employer, deduct income tax and the employee's National Insurance when you pay, and pay both over on time.

Income tax is due within 15 days after the month ends, and National Insurance by the 7th of the following month.

1. **Register**: Register with the Comptroller of Inland Revenue within 30 days after the end of the month in which you become an employer. Register with the National Insurance Corporation within 7 days of hiring the first employee.
2. **Collect the employee's declaration**: The employee gives a tax declaration within 14 days of starting, and the employer uses it with the Department's deduction tables.
3. **Deduct and pay the Inland Revenue Department**: Take the employee's income tax and National Insurance from pay. Pay the tax withheld within 15 days after the end of the month, with the monthly return.
4. **Pay the National Insurance Corporation**: Pay both shares by the 7th of the following month, with the monthly return. Late payments carry a surcharge of 1.25% for each month or part of a month.

The employer's annual return of tax deducted is due within one month after the end of the year, and the employee's certificate of remuneration and tax deducted is due in the same month. Tax withheld and paid late carries a penalty of 10% and interest. The Act sets the interest at 1% a year above the prime rate, while the Department's page says 1% a month, so we confirm the current basis.

A note on this page.

This is a guide, not legal, tax or accounting advice. The figures on this page were read from official sources on 22 October 2026. They come from the Labour Act (Cap. 16.04), the National Insurance Corporation Act, the Income Tax Act and the Bank Holidays Act, in the Revised Laws of Saint Lucia (2023) published by the Attorney General's Chambers. They also come from the National Insurance Corporation website and the Government of Saint Lucia's Department of Labour announcement of the national minimum wage. The Revised Laws show the law as at the end of 2023, and we found no later amendment to the Labour Act. The Inland Revenue Department website and the government portal were not reachable on 22 October 2026, so we read their pages from archived copies dated 2025 and 2026. Confirm current requirements with the Department of Labour, the National Insurance Corporation, the Inland Revenue Department and a qualified adviser before relying on any figure. Sources:
