The short answer

National Insurance is 14% of pay up to GY$280,000 a month: the employer pays 8.4% and the employee 5.6%. The employee's share is deductible from income tax, up to GY$15,680 a month.

From 1 January 2026, income tax uses a monthly allowance of GY$140,000, then 25% up to GY$3,360,000 of chargeable income a year and 35% above.

The employer sends the PAYE deductions to the Revenue Authority within 14 days of the end of the income tax month.

## What does Guyana National Insurance cost the employer and the employee?

National Insurance for an employed person is 14%: 8.4% from the employer and 5.6% from the employee.

It applies to pay up to GY$280,000 a month or GY$64,615 a week.

The ceiling has been unchanged since January 2020. Employed contributors aged 16 to under 60 are covered in full. Self-employed people pay 12.5% of declared income.

| Charge | Employee | Employer | Applies to |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| National Insurance | 5.6% | 8.4% | Pay up to GY$280,000 a month |
| Most the employee pays | GY$15,680 a month | GY$23,520 a month | At or above the ceiling |

The employer's share is a cost on top of pay. We confirm which payments count as insurable earnings and the payment date before the first payslip.

## How does PAYE income tax work in Guyana in 2026?

Each month the employer takes a GY$140,000 allowance, or one third of income after the second-job and overtime allowances if that is greater.

The rest, after National Insurance, is taxed at 25% up to GY$3,360,000 a year and 35% above.

| Item | 2026 rule from the Revenue Authority |
| --- | --- |
| Annual personal deduction | GY$1,680,000, or one third of income if greater |
| Monthly allowance (free pay) | GY$140,000, or one third of the balance of income after the second-job and overtime allowances, if greater |
| Tax rates | 25% on chargeable income up to GY$3,360,000 a year, 35% above |
| National Insurance deduction | 5.6% of gross income up to GY$280,000 a month, so GY$15,680 at most |
| Medical and life insurance premiums | The premiums paid, up to 10% of gross pay or GY$50,000 a month, whichever is less |
| Child deduction | GY$10,000 a month for each child under 18 |
| Second job and overtime | The first GY$50,000 a month of each |

The Income Tax (Amendment) Act No. 3 of 2026 took effect from 1 January 2026, and the Revenue Authority's notice is dated 26 February 2026. Older rate tables on the same site still show 28% and 40% and an allowance of GY$1,200,000, so ignore any table that predates the notice.

Employees claim the child deduction on a claim form with supporting documents, and a second employer needs details of the first job to apply the second-job deduction. Employers must give each employee a 7B statement of earnings.

## What does payroll look like at three pay levels?

At GY$200,000 a month the employee's National Insurance is GY$11,200, income tax is GY$12,200 and take-home is GY$176,600.

The employer's cost on top is GY$16,800.

| Monthly gross pay (GY$) | National Insurance 5.6% (GY$) | Chargeable income (GY$) | Income tax (GY$) | Take-home (GY$) |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 60,147 | 3,368.23 | 0 | 0 | 56,778.77 |
| 200,000 | 11,200.00 | 48,800 | 12,200.00 | 176,600.00 |
| 400,000 | 15,680.00 | 244,320 | 61,080.00 | 323,240.00 |

The figures are our arithmetic from the rules above: gross pay less the GY$140,000 allowance and National Insurance, taxed at 25%. They leave out medical premiums, children, a second job, overtime and any other allowance, so a real payslip will differ.

## How does Guyana payroll run each month?

Deduct National Insurance and PAYE when you pay, add the employer's 8.4%, and send the PAYE to the Revenue Authority within 14 days of the end of the month.

Employers file the monthly return on Form 5.

1. **Work out gross pay**: Add the month's pay and any taxable allowances for each employee.
2. **Deduct the employee's shares**: Take 5.6% National Insurance up to the ceiling and income tax after the allowances, and give the employee a statement of earnings.
3. **Add the employer share**: The employer's 8.4% is a cost on top of pay and is not recovered from the employee.
4. **Pay and file**: Send the PAYE within 14 days of the end of the income tax month and file Form 5 online through the Revenue Authority's eServices.

The Labour Act allows an employer to deduct only listed items from wages, such as rent, advances and goods supplied, and not more than one third of the employee's wages in a month. Wages are paid weekly, fortnightly or monthly unless the parties agree otherwise, and in money.

A note from Tom Price-Daniel

Guyana runs National Insurance at 14% and PAYE at 25% then 35%, with a GY$140,000 monthly allowance that only applies from 2026.
The traps are old rate tables that still show 28% and 40%, and the 14-day deadline for sending PAYE.
Deduct the employee's shares when you pay, and we will keep the deadline.
