Three things to know before you hire in Guyana

- **Income tax was cut in 2026.** From 1 January 2026 the monthly allowance is GY$140,000, the 25% rate runs to GY$3,360,000 of chargeable income a year, and 35% applies above it.
- **Severance starts after one completed year.** It is one week of basic wages for each of the first five years, then two weeks, then three, up to 52 weeks.
- **We found no statutory employer sick pay, thirteenth month or paid maternity leave.** The National Insurance Scheme pays sickness and maternity benefits instead.

The short answer

Hiring in Guyana adds 8.4% National Insurance to gross pay, on pay up to GY$280,000 a month. The private-sector minimum wage is GY$347 an hour, or GY$60,147 a month.

## How does Teamed handle Guyana hiring for you?

Teamed's real HR and legal experts check the employment route for your Guyana hire first, then run payroll, contracts and compliance [**from $599 per employee per month**](/pricing), with **zero FX markup** in any currency.

Payroll, the contract and the local rules run on **one platform**.

**Real HR and legal experts** look at each Guyana hire, and **a designated person** runs your first hire from signed terms to first payslip. Guyana licenses persons who recruit or supply workers to others, so the first job is to check the right route for your hire. Employer costs **pass through at cost, itemised** on every invoice.

Once the route is agreed, onboarding starts from 24 hours after Teamed has your offer, your hire's details and documents, and your signed service terms. Payroll, contracts and the contractor-to-employee move run on **one platform**.

A contractor who becomes an employee keeps their record, and the same employee can **graduate** to your own entity later. Run the [Crossover Calculator](https://www.teamed.global/tools/crossover-calculator) to see the month the model flips. EOR is the right model for a first Guyana hire, **until it isn't**.

## How much does it cost to hire an employee in Guyana in 2026?

A Guyana hire costs gross pay plus 8.4% National Insurance on pay up to GY$280,000 a month.

The employee's 5.6% and the income tax come out of the employee's pay, so they do not add to your cost.

Above GY$280,000 a month the National Insurance part stops growing, at GY$23,520 a month for the employer. We found no other employer payroll levy in the Guyana Revenue Authority's or the Scheme's published lists. Paid leave, public holidays and severance still add to the cost of the job.

Teamed's fee here is a starting rate, with zero FX markup in any currency. Gross pay, taxes and benefits pass through at cost, itemised on every invoice.

The cost guide has worked examples at three pay levels.

## Do you need a local company to hire employees in Guyana?

Not always, but Guyana licenses persons who recruit or supply workers to others, so experts check the route first.

Your own entity can cost less as you grow, but the crossover moves with your fee, your entity quote and your growth, so run the Crossover Calculator for your own number.

Hiring directly means taking on the employer's duties yourself: National Insurance payments, PAYE deductions and the Termination of Employment and Severance Pay Act. An [employer of record](/employer-of-record) can carry those where the route allows it.

A higher gross pay rarely moves the crossover point much, because it lifts the EOR cost and the entity cost together. The EOR vs entity guide shows what changes here.

You progress from contractor to EOR to your own entity on **one platform** under Teamed's [Graduation Model](/graduation-model).

## What changed in Guyana employment law recently?

The income tax allowance rose to GY$1,680,000 a year, or GY$140,000 a month, from 1 January 2026.

The private-sector minimum wage has not changed since 1 July 2022.

The Guyana Revenue Authority's notice of 26 February 2026 says the Income Tax (Amendment) Act No. 3 of 2026 raised the allowance and moved the top of the 25% band to GY$3,360,000 a year. Above that, chargeable income is taxed at 35%. Employers had to recalculate from March 2026 and refund over-deductions for January and February.

Older Revenue Authority rate tables are still online and show 28% and 40%, so check the date on any table you use. We found no later minimum wage order than the Labour (National Minimum Wage) Order 2022.

## What leave and benefits must you give employees in Guyana?

Employees earn at least one day of paid leave for each completed month of employment.

Sickness and maternity pay come from the National Insurance Scheme, not from the employer.

The Scheme's sickness benefit is 70% of average weekly insurable earnings, from the fourth day of illness. Its maternity allowance is also 70%, normally for 13 weeks. The labour laws we read set no employer-paid maternity leave and no statutory paternity leave.

The hiring guide sets out each rule.

## What are payroll taxes in Guyana in 2026?

Employers pay 8.4% National Insurance. Employees pay 5.6% and income tax at 25% then 35% after the allowance.

The employer deducts income tax through PAYE and sends it to the Revenue Authority within 14 days of the end of the month.

The employee's National Insurance is deductible before income tax, up to GY$15,680 a month. The notice also allows deductions for medical and life insurance premiums, children under 18, a second job and overtime.

The tax and payroll guide has worked examples.

## How do you terminate an employee in Guyana?

After probation, notice in writing is two weeks if the employee has under a year of service, and one month from a year.

Severance is paid from one completed year of service, at one to three weeks of basic wages for each year.

Probation is three months unless the parties agree another period, and either side can end the job during it with no notice. A written warning comes before a dismissal for repeated misconduct or poor performance short of serious misconduct.

An unfair dismissal claim goes to the High Court. The termination guide covers notice, severance and the process.

## What should you know before hiring in Guyana?

Two things catch employers out. The week is 40 hours, not 44 or 48, and overtime starts after 8 hours in a day.

The second is that a recruiting licence can apply if you place workers with other employers.

**Overtime is 1.5 times the hourly rate.** The Ministry of Labour says the same rate applies to work on Sundays and public holidays, and that factory workers get double pay on Sundays and six named holidays.

**The Recruiting of Workers Act can apply to supply of labour.** It exempts recruiting by employers with 50 or fewer workers, and personal, domestic and non-manual workers unless professional agents recruit them. We check the route, and a person who is not a citizen also needs permission to work.

A note from Tom Price-Daniel

Guyana counts a 40-hour week, adds 8.4% to gross pay for the employer, and pays severance from the first completed year.
Most of the surprises come from assuming statutory sick pay or a thirteenth month, or from using an income tax table that predates 2026.
Read the guide for the layer you are on before the first offer goes out, not after the first payslip.
