# How do you hire an employee in *Grenada* in 2026?

An employee in Grenada works up to 40, 44 or 60 hours a week depending on the job, with an 8-hour ordinary day for most. The employer gives a written statement of particulars within a month of the start. The short answer

The ordinary week is 40 hours for agricultural, construction and industrial workers, 44 for clerical, shop and catering workers, and 60 for domestic workers and security guards. Overtime pays at least 1.5 times the hourly wage.

Most employees earn two weeks of paid annual leave in the first year and three weeks after that. Maternity leave is three months.

## What must a written contract or statement cover in Grenada?

Within one month of starting work, the employer must give the employee a written statement of particulars.

It covers the parties, the start date, pay and how it is worked out, pay intervals, the work, normal hours, any extra termination terms and disciplinary rules.

The duty does not apply to an employee who works under 16 hours a week or is on a fixed term or task of under twelve weeks. A contract may be for an unspecified period, a specified period or a specific task.

A contract that is called fixed-term or task-based but fills a lasting post in the normal activity of the business is treated as a contract for an unspecified period. Pay is by the month or the fortnight at least, and each payment comes with an itemised statement of gross pay, deductions and net pay.

## What are the working-hours rules in Grenada?

The ordinary week is 40 hours for agricultural, construction and industrial workers, 44 for clerical, shop and catering workers, and 60 for domestic workers and security guards.

The ordinary day is 8 hours for most employees, and overtime needs an agreement and pays at least 1.5 times the hourly wage.

| Rule | What the Employment Act sets |
| --- | --- |
| Agricultural, construction and industrial workers | 40 hours a week, Monday to Friday |
| Clerical and shop assistants | 44 hours a week, Monday to Saturday |
| Catering assistants | 44 hours a week |
| Domestic workers and security guards | 60 hours a week |
| Ordinary day | 8 hours, not counting lunch. Domestic workers 10 hours including 2 for lunch and rest. Security guards 12 hours |
| Rest | No more than 6 consecutive days without 24 consecutive hours of rest |
| Meal interval | At least 1 hour after 5 hours of continuous work, and 30 minutes by agreement with written notice to the Labour Commissioner |
| Overtime | By agreement, at least 1.5 times the hourly wage, and 2 times on a Sunday or public holiday |

The categories are defined in the Act, and a person in a management position is outside most of them. We check which category your role falls into before the offer goes out.

## How does probation work in Grenada?

When the contract does not say, probation is up to one month for unskilled workers and three months for other workers.

Up to its end, either side can end the job without notice.

A collective agreement can extend the three months. An employee dismissed during probation cannot bring an unfair dismissal complaint. Put the probation period in writing, because the default depends on the type of worker.

The termination guide has the rules after probation.

## How much leave do employees get in Grenada?

Annual leave is at least two weeks, with pay, in the first year and three weeks after that, for the job categories the Act lists.

Sick leave is paid after twelve months of continuous service, and maternity leave is three months.

| Leave | Entitlement |
| --- | --- |
| Annual leave | 2 weeks in the first year, then 3 weeks, with pay |
| Annual leave, daily or hourly paid | At least 1 working day for every 15 days or 120 hours worked |
| Bank holidays | 13 a year, listed in the Bank Holidays Act |
| Sick leave with pay | After 12 months' continuous service, on a medical certificate |
| Maternity leave | 3 months, with pay after 18 months' continuous service |
| Paternity leave | None in the Employment Act |
| Family leave | By agreement, and the employer cannot unreasonably refuse |

The 13 bank holidays are 1 January, Independence Day on 7 February, Good Friday, Easter Monday and Labour Day (also Indian Arrival Day) on 1 May. The rest are Whit Monday, Corpus Christi, Emancipation Day on 1 August, the two Carnival days in August, Thanksgiving on 25 October, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. A holiday that falls on a Sunday moves to the Monday.

Banks and public offices close on them, and the Employment Act pays overtime at double the hourly wage on a public holiday. It also pays a daily-paid worker for a holiday when they worked the day before and the day after. We confirm in the contract how each holiday is paid.

Annual leave is extended by one working day for each public holiday that falls inside it, and unused leave is paid when the job ends. Paid sick leave is at the normal wage less any National Insurance sickness benefit. The employer need not pay for more than five uncertified absences in a year.

## What maternity leave must you give in Grenada?

An employee is entitled to three months of maternity leave, with pay once she has 18 months of continuous service.

She gives at least three weeks' notice, and an employer cannot dismiss her because she is pregnant.

For a monthly paid employee, maternity pay is two months' salary less what she receives from the National Insurance Scheme. After the first occasion, paid maternity leave is available once in each two years and on no more than three occasions in total. A woman with less than 18 months of service can take the three months without pay.

The National Insurance maternity allowance is 65% of insurable earnings for three months, with a grant of EC$522. The Employment Act gives no statutory paternity leave. Any paternity leave is a matter of contract or policy.

## Does a hire need a work permit in Grenada?

A foreign national or Commonwealth citizen needs a valid work permit to be employed in Grenada.

A permit is granted for a year, and the Ministry of Labour processes a complete application within 12 working days.

The permit names the employer and the place of work. Some people are exempt, including some citizens of the Caribbean Community under its skills regime, so we check the route for each hire. Employing a person without a valid permit is an offence.

We check each hire's right to work before the contract is signed.

## How does Teamed help with a Grenada hire from offer to contract?

Teamed's **real HR and legal experts** check the right route for your Grenada hire first: employer of record, contractor or your own entity.

Then a designated person takes you through the contract terms.

The experts apply the Employment Act's hours, probation and leave rules to the contract you choose, and you direct the work.

The check is part of every plan and comes before any contract is signed. Contractor, employer-of-record and own-entity routes run on **one platform**, so a change of route does not mean a change of provider.

1. **Agree the offer**: Role, gross pay and contracted hours. Check the role against the Minimum Wages Order's categories.
2. **Check the route**: Experts confirm whether employer of record, contractor or your own entity fits, and whether a work permit is needed.
3. **Settle the contract terms**: Hours, probation, leave and the written statement of particulars are agreed before the start date.
4. **Plan payroll**: National Insurance and income tax registrations are set up for the chosen route before the first payslip.

Start from the [Grenada hiring overview](/country-hiring-guides/grenada), or run the [Employer Cost Calculator](https://www.teamed.global/tools/employer-cost) before your first offer goes out. EOR is the right model for a first hire in many countries, **until it isn't**.

## Frequently asked questions

What is the monthly minimum wage in Grenada?

There is no single national figure. The Minimum Wages Order 2023 sets floors by job category, and EC$1,200 a month applies to clerical workers, shop assistants, administrative clerks, cashiers and receptionists. Other groups have daily, weekly or hourly rates.

How long can probation last in Grenada?

When the contract is silent, one month for unskilled workers and three months for other workers. Up to the end of probation either side can end the job without notice.

Is there a thirteenth-month payment in Grenada?

We found none in the Employment Act. Any bonus is a matter of contract.

Does Grenada have statutory paternity leave?

No. The Employment Act gives three months of maternity leave but no statutory paternity leave. Any paternity leave is a matter of contract or policy.

Can an employer use fixed-term contracts in Grenada?

Yes, for a specified period or a specific task. A fixed-term or task contract that fills a lasting post in the normal activity of the business is treated as a contract for an unspecified period.

A note from Tom Price-Daniel

Grenada sets the working week by job category, pays overtime at 1.5 times, and gives three months of maternity leave but no paternity leave.
The traps sit in the details: a minimum wage that depends on the role, and fixed-term contracts that count as permanent.
Your designated person takes you through the contract terms before the first offer goes out.
