The short answer

Angola caps the normal working week at 44 hours and the day at 8. Overtime is limited to 2 hours a day, 40 hours a month and 200 hours a year, and the first 30 hours a month carry a 50% premium.

Employees take 22 working days of paid leave. Maternity leave is three months, paternity leave is one paid day plus seven unpaid working days, and 12 national public holidays apply.

## What must an Angola employment contract say?

An open-ended contract is the rule. A fixed-term contract is valid only in writing and only for a listed reason.

A contract that should be written and is not is treated as open-ended.

| Fixed-term reason | Longest duration |
| --- | --- |
| Seasonal or urgent work | 6 months |
| A temporary increase in activity, occasional tasks, or limited activity | 12 months |
| Replacing an absent worker, construction work, or apprenticeship | 36 months |
| Launching new activities or a restructure | 60 months |

A contract that runs past its maximum becomes open-ended. Put the role, the place of work, the weekly hours and the pay in the written contract.

A party that does not want to renew a fixed-term contract gives 30 days' notice. Contracts with non-resident foreign workers follow a separate decree, covered below.

## How does probation work in Angola?

An open-ended contract has a 60-day probation unless both sides agree in writing to reduce or drop it.

The parties can agree in writing to extend it to 120 days, or 180 days for management roles.

A fixed-term contract can have a probation of up to 30 days if both sides agree in writing. During probation either party can end the contract without notice, compensation or reasons, and the employer still pays the agreed pay.

Put the probation terms in the written contract.

## What are the working-hours rules in Angola?

Normal working time is at most 44 hours a week and 8 hours a day.

Shift, modulated and variable schedules can stretch the week to 54 hours.

| Work done | Pay |
| --- | --- |
| Overtime, first 30 hours in a month | Normal hourly value plus 50% |
| Overtime beyond 30 hours in a month | Normal hourly value plus 75% |
| Work on the weekly rest day | Normal value plus 75% |
| Night work | An extra 20% of base pay |

Overtime is capped at 2 hours on a normal day, 40 hours a month and 200 hours a year. The meal break is at least 45 minutes and at most 90. Weekly rest is at least 24 consecutive hours.

The hourly value comes from a statutory formula: monthly base pay times 12, divided by 52 weeks times the weekly hours. Angola sets no statutory hourly minimum wage, only the monthly one.

## How much leave do Angolan employees get?

Annual leave is 22 working days a year, not counting weekends and public holidays.

Angola has 12 national public holidays, and work stops at 12:30 on 24 and 31 December.

| Leave and pay | Entitlement |
| --- | --- |
| Annual leave | 22 working days a year |
| Annual leave in the year of hiring | 2 working days per complete month, at least 6 |
| Holiday gratification | At least 50% of base pay a year |
| Christmas subsidy | At least 50% of base pay a year |
| Public holidays | 12 national holidays |
| Illness or accident | Employer pays for up to 6 months, with a right of recovery from the social security body |
| Caring for a family member | Up to 8 paid working days a year |

The two annual payments are due for each year of service. The percentage of pay during sickness is set in a separate regulation, so we don't print one.

Family care covers a spouse, parents and children up to 18.

## What maternity and paternity leave must you give in Angola?

Maternity leave is three months, and it can start four weeks before the expected birth.

Paternity leave is one paid day around the birth, plus seven working days that the employer does not pay.

A mother can add up to four weeks of complementary leave after maternity leave, and that extra leave is not paid. For a multiple birth, the leave after the birth is extended by four weeks. If the birth is later than expected, the leave is extended so that nine full weeks follow the birth.

The Labour Law says the maternity regime is set in a separate regulation, so the benefit rate and who pays it are not printed here. Teamed confirms them before the first payslip. A pregnant worker, and a mother up to 12 months after the birth, has special protection against dismissal for objective reasons.

## What changes when you hire a non-resident foreigner in Angola?

Decreto Presidencial n.º 49/25 lets an employer hire at most 30% of its workforce from non-resident foreigners, and the other 70% must be national workforce.

The contract is fixed-term, in writing, and registered within 30 days of the start of work.

The contract can be renewed at most twice. A fee of 5% of the monthly pay in the contract is due each time a contract or addendum is registered.

The contract must include a commitment to return to the country of origin when it ends, recognised before a notary. On dismissal the employer pays what is due, keeps the contract's housing until the immigration service is told, and provides a return ticket.

## Frequently asked questions

What is the monthly minimum wage in Angola?

AOA 100,000 a month from 16 September 2025 under Decreto Presidencial n.º 152/24, and AOA 50,000 for micro-enterprises and start-ups. Angola sets no statutory hourly minimum, only a formula for working out the hourly value.

How long can a probationary period last in Angola?

60 days by default in an open-ended contract, extendable in writing to 120 days, or 180 days for management roles. In a fixed-term contract it can be up to 30 days if agreed in writing. Either side can end it without notice.

Is there a thirteenth-month payment in Angola?

In effect, yes. The Labour Law gives every employee a Christmas subsidy of at least 50% of base pay and a holiday gratification of at least 50%, for each year of service. Contracts or collective agreements can set a higher percentage.

How much paternity leave do Angolan fathers get?

One paid day around the birth, plus seven working days of complementary leave that the employer does not have to pay.

Can an employer in Angola use fixed-term contracts freely?

No. The Labour Law allows them only for listed temporary needs, in writing, within maximum durations of 6, 12, 36 or 60 months depending on the reason. A contract that runs past its maximum becomes open-ended.

A note from Tom Price-Daniel

Angola gives you a 44-hour week, 22 working days of leave and two annual payments of at least 50% of base pay each.
The traps sit in the details: a fixed-term contract that needs a listed reason, and an overtime register the employee endorses.
Your designated person runs the first hire from signed terms to first payslip.

This is a guide, not legal, tax or accounting advice. The figures on this page were read from official Angolan sources on 20 October 2026: the General Labour Law (Lei n.º 12/23, Diário da República, 27 December 2023), the national minimum wage decree (Decreto Presidencial n.º 152/24), the social protection contribution decree (Decreto Presidencial n.º 227/18), the 2026 State Budget Law (Lei n.º 14/25, read from a published copy) for the IRT table, the Tax Administration's IRT guidance, the national holidays law and the decree on non-resident foreign workers (Decreto Presidencial n.º 49/25, read from a published copy). A rise in the social security rates has been reported but we found no published decree, and a new personal income tax code has been reported for 2027. Confirm current requirements with the Tax Administration (AGT), the Social Security Institute (INSS) and a qualified adviser before relying on any figure. Sources:
